still Letter Never Sent (Mikhail Kalatozov, SU 1960)

De brief die nooit verzonden werd (Letter Never Sent)

Michail Kalatozov / SUHH, 1960 / 96 min.

A scientific expedition to Siberia forms the starting point for this visually overwhelming epic in which the lead role is claimed by the struggle against a rampaging forest fire. Digital restoration of Michail Kalatozov’s classic about the power of nature and human greed.

poster Letter Never Sent (Mikhail Kalatozov, SU 1960)
With the war in Ukraine and harsh repression meted out by Putin, Russia seems to be returning to the dictatorial era of Stalin, with a contemporary twist. Unlike in the late 1950s and early ’60s, when Nikita Khrushchev created space for political reforms, and the cultural climate became (relatively) more liberal – a period known as 'the Thaw'.
