Jaromil Jires / CSHH, 1969 / 80 min.
Jaromil Jireš' brilliant adaptation of the novel by renowned Czech author Milan Kundera, who died this summer. A dark tale of crime and punishment in a life destroyed by a trivial joke.

The Joke tells the story of a man who has been expelled from the communist party for making a political joke. After 'rehabilitation' in the mines and a sojourn in prison, he plans his revenge on a former friend who ratted him out. Jireš manages to convey all the fundamental themes of Kundera's novel using masterfully subdued, pure cinematic language.
