The ‘Diary trilogy’ by Hungarian filmmaker Márta Mészáros (1931, Budapest) follows the turbulent life of orphan Juli, whose father – a fervent Communist – emigrated to the Soviet Union before disappearing during the Stalinist purges. Her mother also died young. Juli goes to study at the film academy in Moscow, returning to the city of her birth in November 1956.
