Drawing Lots
Tamta Khalvashi, Zaza Khalvashi / GE, LT, 2023 / 84 min.
Batumi, Georgia, a coastal town for the nouveau riche, but also for ordinary Georgians who live close together in the city’s poorer neighbourhoods. Amusing, atmospheric portrait of neighbours around a courtyard. Director Zaza Khalvashi’s final film.
Put people together and tensions arise. A courtyard in a densely populated neighbourhood in Batumi, otherwise known as ‘Georgia’s Odessa’.
There’s the young man who thrashes his electric guitar at the window in the morning, there is the hopelessly in love teen, the guy who is back from prison, the pensioner’s slipping into their dotage in front of the TV and the biker who brings flowers for a girl only to be sent packing by her mother.
