In November and December, you can also watch the best European films from illustrious makers such as Wim Wenders, Michel Gondry, Anton Corbijn, Steve McQueen and Aki Kaurismäki at Eye.
The Month of the European Film celebrates the fabulous harvest of European films. Special programmes, events and retrospectives will be laid on from Reykjavik to Athens and from Lisbon to Bucharest.
At Eye, you will be able to watch the premieres of Anselm, Wim Wenders’ spectacular 3D documentary (6K) that immerses you in the work and life of Anselm Kiefer, the German master of huge format art or Le livre des solutions by Michel Gondry, a humorous, absurd reflection on the film profession from a director who is lauded for his surreal imagination.
Squaring the Circle by Anton Corbijn tells the story of the creative genii behind the Hipgnosis design studio. Steve McQueen’s monumental film De bezette stad is about daily life in Amsterdam under Nazi occupation, yet switches to our era, with devastating effect.
From Finland comes a classic Aki Kaurismäki: Fallen Leaves portrays the tentative affair between two have-nots in an alcohol subsumed Helsinki, where love overcomes, despite it all. From the UK come idiosyncratic filmmakers Andrea Arnold and Lynne Ramsay; Eye will be screening all their work.
Month of European Film opens on 1 November 2023 with European Arthouse Cinema Day and the launch of the European Film Club. The month concludes on 9 December with the presentation of the 36th European Film Awards in Berlin.
