Jean-Bédel Bokassa seized power in the Central African Republic in 1966. His nightmare regime was underpinned by a personality cult: he was said to have fathered more than 50 children, fed his enemies to crocodiles live and eaten human flesh. In 1977 he had himself crowned emperor at a mind-boggling ceremony inspired by Napoleon.
