Elegant Beast
Yuzo Kawashima / JP, 1962 / 96 min.
Once again Yuzo Kawashima looks behind the façade of 'civilised' Japanese life thereby exposing the festering wounds of an ostensibly inconspicuous family. New 4K restoration.

Elegant Beast is set almost entirely in the seemingly self-effacing Maeda family’s claustrophobic apartment. However, behind the modest façade lies a microcosm of transactional relationships. Everyone is a voyeur in the cramped space: family patriarch Tokizo oversees everything and everyone around him.

The Elegant Beasts of Yuzo Kawashima
Japanese director Yuzo Kawashima is seen as the ‘missing link’ between the classic Japanese cinema of the ’50s and the New Wave of the ’60s. He had a highly developed sense of the absurd, and in his films fought against hypocrisy and false facades.
