Encounters at the End of the World
Werner Herzog / US, 2007 / 109 min.
Herzog journeyed to Antarctica where he met several eccentric scientists whose pointless heroism amid the landscape’s alien beauty is underlined using funny, moving scenes.
McMurdo has to be one of the strangest places on the planet. Amid the Antarctic ice a noisy building site appears with worn out barracks, monstrous vehicles and oddly shaped scientific research centres. Werner Herzog can’t get enough and shows us what things can be like in Antarctica: McMurdo has a bowling alley, a soft-ice machine, yoga instructors, an ATM and air-conditioning. The place attracts some very eccentric people, including Herzog.

With an unorthodox oeuvre of more than seventy features, documentaries and shorts, Herzog has fascinated audiences with unforgettable stories, images and characters for more than half a century. His films grant us insights into the relationship between people and the chaotic world around them, as well as into the endless indifference of nature towards human life.
