Gasherbrum – der Leuchtende Berg
Werner Herzog / DE, 1985 / 45 min.
In just 45 minutes, Werner Herzog zooms in on the driving force behind world-famous alpinist Reinhold Messner. With his comrade Hans Kammerlander, Messner conquered two eight-thousand-metre peaks in the Himalayas. Herzog follows them to their base camp to reveal that, ultimately, climbing is a pointless obsession.
It sounds like sheer madness: attempting to conquer two mountains more than eight thousand metres high in a single, uninterrupted climb. Experienced alpinists shook their heads at Messner’s plan to reach the summits of the Gasherbrum in alpine style – without oxygen, without sherpas, without fixed ropes.
