About Eye

Could it get any more colourful, grotesque, insane after the ’70s cult film, El Topo? Of course it could. Just one example: the scene in which the Mexican revolution is re-enacted by toads. Jodorowsky pulls out all the stops in this, his third feature.

In Jodorowky's first two films, the protagonists undertake a journey to a mythical destination that turns out to be both physical and spiritual. This is again the case in <em>The Holy Mountain</em>: a tramp takes on a journey to enlightenment in a group led by an alchemist played by Jodorowsky himself.

The triumph of Alejandro Jodorowsky's second feature started in late 1970 at a New York arthouse cinema, where it was programmed as a night screening without any real publicity. Within no time, there were long queues at the box office; and the midnight movie phenomenon was born.

After saving a woman from the clutches of a gang of bandits in the desert, the black-clad avenger El Topo (Jodorowsky himself) sets out to eliminate four infamous gunslingers. He awakes four years later, having been shot, in a cave complex inhabited by a community of misshapen people who worship him as their god. El Topo gets to work to lead ‘his’ people to freedom.

With his anarchistic debut film from 1968, Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky continued his previous theatrical activities by other means. He based Fando y Lis on a play by his friend Fernando Arrabal, or rather: on a memory of this.

Fando and his lame travelling companion Lis go in search of the mythical city of Tar. Their journey begins among the ruins of demolished houses where a chic group is holding a cocktail party. From there, they enter a volcanic, post-apocalyptic landscape where bizarre events and encounters await the two of them.
