Fanny and Alexander

Ingmar Bergman / FR, DE, SE, 1982 / 188 min.

Ingmar Bergman’s tragi-comedic, opulent family history is a kind of review of his youth (“idyllic and panic stricken”). A new digital restoration has been made of this highlight from the great Swedish director’s oeuvre.

Widow Emilie Ekdahl, a vibrant young woman, marries Edvard Vergerus, a strict Lutheran priest. Emilie's children Fanny and Alexander mourn the loss of their father and rebel. Vergerus proves to be a fanatic for whom love between humans is sinful. The clergyman bans all joy from the children’s lives and banishes them to the loft. Alexander decides to use black magic to exact revenge on their stepfather.
