In 1949, during the Cold War, famous author Thomas Mann was driven across destroyed Germany by his daughter Erika. Old favourite Hans Zischler (Thomas Mann) and famous actress Sandra Hüller star in Pawel Pawlikowski’s portrait of an author’s family and their relationship to Germany’s past.
Thomas Mann, the famous author is aboard a black Buick traversing the ruins of Germany. The driver, his daughter Erika, a well known comedian (Die Peffermühle), journalist, author and rally driver.
In 1949, the world was gripped by the Cold War. After 16 years, the author of ‘Exil’ returns from exile in Switzerland and the USA to collect some honours. The trip takes him from Frankfurt am Main in West Germany to Weimar in East Germany, in other words through the American sector into the Soviet sector.
