Female Perversions

Susan Streitfeld / DEUZE, US, 1996 / 117 min.

An ambitious lawyer in Los Angeles wallows in meaningless sex with men and women. This erotic drama come psychological thriller – Tilda Swinton’s US cinematic debut – is a provocative film about what it means to be a woman in the modern world.

Eve Stephens (Tilda Swinton) a successful, ambitious lawyer, is about to be made a judge in Los Angeles’ merciless legal system. At the same time her relationship with her kleptomaniac sister Madelyn is fraught and she maintains meaningless sexual relations with men and women including the geologist John and psychiatrist Renee. Eve has a nervous breakdown when her ruminations about her age, appearance, sex appeal and qualities as a lawyer get out of control.

Pre-film

Prior to Female Perversions, you will see All Kinds of Love by Danish photographer and filmmaker Casper Sejersen (2023, 3’), in which Tilda Swinton reads the poem of the same name, known from the 1964 artwork by Claes Oldenburg and Walasse Ting. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye

The first film I made after Jarman’s death. Susan Streitfeld’s fearless adaptation of Louise Kaplan’s psychoanalytic study of perverse behaviour presented by women. Sisters, denial, kleptomania, the Californian desert, and the ultimate ‘power’ wardrobe designed by Bella Freud.
