Burn After Reading
Ethan Coen, Joel Coen / US, GB, FR, 2008 / 96 min.
A star-studded slapstick spy comedy full of tragically funny characters with a few of the Coen Brothers’ favourite actors including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Richard Jenkins and Tilda Swinton.

Joel and Ethan Coen returned to satire with this spy spoof about an alcoholic CIA analyst, opportunistic instructors at the Hardbodies gym and a paranoid, flirty Marshall. George Clooney plays a former security agent who chats up a powerful bully (Tilda Swinton) who feels nothing but contempt for her husband Osborne (John Malkovich).
Pre-film
Before Burn After Reading, you’ll see the Italian short film Kri Kri fuma l’oppio (1913, 6’), where a pack of cigarettes isn’t what it seems and Kri Kri starts hallucinating. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye
The Coen Brothers’ diamond-sharp script and stellar players felt, to me, like an encounter with old-school Hollywood finesse. After Michael Clayton the previous year - by the brilliant Tony Gilroy - my second film with George Clooney in a row. I am very honoured to be included in both.
