Filmclub Noord: Publieke werken
This story set in the late 19th century is adapted from Dutch author Thomas Rosenboom’s popular novel and has Jacob Derwig and Gijs Scholten van Aschat in the lead roles. Fortune appears to be smiling on violin maker Walter Vedder and his cousin, the pharmacist Anijs. The two have big plans for the future, but tragedy is lurking around the corner. Also starring Rifka Lodeizen.
Amsterdam 1888: violin maker Vedder (van Aschat) is living in a small house directly opposite the newly built Central Station that has to make way for a grand hotel. Vedder”s pharmacist cousin Anijs (Derwig) finds himself in trouble as a result of unlawful medical practices and is looking for a way out. The two conceive a highly risky plan, and a golden future appears to be waiting for them…
The film was directed by Joram Lürsen (Alles is liefde), scripted by Frank Ketelaar (In Oranje), and shot in Hungary. Publieke Werken is based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Thomas Rosenboom (Libris Prize 2000). More than 450,000 copies have already been sold in the Netherlands; the novel was also translated and published in Germany, Denmark, Slovakia and Hungary.
