Fior di male
Carmine Gallone / IT, 1915 / 62 min.
True melodrama, featuring the legendary film diva Lyda Borelli, in which a youthful beauty of common origins climbs to the top of the social ladder. Dutch première of Eye’s restoration accompanied live by German cellists Tobias Stutz and Paul Rittel.
Italian diva Lyda Borelli starred in melodramas replete with intense emotions. A hype developed around her: women imitated her hairdo, clothing and ecstatic movements. Along with divas including Francesca Bertini and Pina Menichelli, Borelli became one of the most worshipped women in early cinema. Italy was obsessed with their seductive power and gawped at their beauty and exalted, opera-derived acting style.
