A Fistful of Dollars

Sergio Leone / IT, DE, ES, 1964 / 95 min.

This autumn, we are devoting special attention to the western: it’s exactly 60 years since Per un pugno di dollari (A Fistful of Dollars), starring Clint Eastwood, was released in Italian cinemas. The first part of Sergio Leone’s legendary trilogy intended to breathe new life into the western genre.

Italian director Sergio Leone relocated Akira Kurosawa’s samurai action comedy Yojimbo to the American Wild West – shot in Spain – and cast American TV actor Clint Eastwood (‘Rowdy Yates’ from Rawhide) as the ‘Man with No Name’, a mysterious, poncho-clad gunfighter playing off two rival gangs of bandits against one another in a desolate Mexican border town. The film’s laconic antihero, sarcastic humour, stylish look and spectacular gunfights made it an international box-office hit – thanks in no small part to Ennio Morricone’s iconic score.
