Eye on Art: Ginta Tinte Vasermane - Artist in Residence
Eye's Artist in Residence for 2024 Ginta Tinte Vasermane will present her new video work that studies human behaviour, societal standards and role play. During her residency she worked with Eye’s collection of silent slapstick films and Vaudeville.
Inspired by her findings in the Eye collection, Ginta Tinte Vasermane created the new multi-channel video installation Formed by the Gaze, Twisted by the Beast, which will be exhibited in Eye's Foyer from 2 through 9 December. In an artist talk, she shares her working process and shows her sources of inspiration.
Ginta: “During the artist residency at Eye Filmmuseum, I looked into the past of moving image to understand a present. My main focus was silent cinema slapstick films, Vaudeville and non-fiction moving image materials. I was looking in unknown authors, and not so much the known slapstick makers. My attention was taking works with obscure situations, awkward movements /moments, specific choreography.
I looked into slapstick comedy of chaos and failure, violence, madness, fights, violent chasings, women’s oppressions and revival, as well as absurd choreography in architecture (like Vaudeville) or extreme stunts. I was concentrating on anarchistic approaches, scenes which turns upside down social norms. Illogical behaviours and scenes, which has mostly in begging’s of silent cinema era, but also later.
Through archival images I wanted to analyse human behaviour, what can we learn from those images about us as humans, how we act, play rolls, why we use humour, absurd and how there is similarities to nowadays.”
With live music by Elizabete Beāte Rudzinska (composer), Marcus Wärnheim 9saxophone), Néstor Martínez Jara (tuba, serpent) and Katerina Orfanoudaki (harpsichord).

The cinema halls at Eye Filmmuseum are not only equipped with modern digital projectors; analogue films on 35mm and 70mm film strips are also regularly shown. This makes Eye one of the few remaining cinemas where you can still experience film on celluloid. And that's special, because the viewing experience of analogue film remains unparalleled.
