Girlfriends
Claudia Weill / US, 1978 / 88 min.
Claudia Weill’s first feature film follows the experiences of Susan, a young Jewish woman in New York, and her emotional anchors: her flatmate Anne and the older rabbi Gold (Eli Wallach). An unembellished portrait of a life, with a comic, bittersweet undertone.

Twenty-something Susan Weinblatt (Melanie Mayron) is trying to make it as an art photographer in New York; easier said than done, as the gallery circuit in The Big Apple proves a very tough nut to crack.

Liberating Hollywood
In its Liberating Hollywood programme, Eye is screening works by female directors working in the US in the 1970s. Pioneers of the second-wave feminist era, their work has seldom or never been screened in the Netherlands. Highlights of the programme are Wanda (Barbara Loden) and Girlfriends (Claudia Weill), the inspiration for Lena Dunham’s series Girls.
