Gladiator
Ridley Scott / US, 2000 / 154 min.
In antiquity the road to the top was strewn with corpses, as demonstrated by Emperor Commodus. Joaquin Phoenix, who also plays the lead in Ridley Scott’s latest epic, Napoleon, impresses as the perverted, power-crazed leader who forces General Maximus (Russell Crowe) to become a gladiator.

Roman emperors came in all shapes and sizes: some were wise, some cruel and others became known as intelligent innovators or brilliant military strategists. All wielded absolute power even if they proved to be completely insane and perverted. \
The latter category includes emperors such as Nero and Commodus. The latter plays a significant role in Ridley Scott’s gladiator epic (five Oscars) featuring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix as antipodes. The first a loyal soldier with a developed sense of right and wrong, the other a ruthless schemer. In Eye on glorious 35mm.
Joaquin Phoenix Twice
Gladiator is the story of the enslaved general, Maximus (Crowe), who takes on Emperor Marcus Aurelius’ murder, the latter’s own son, Commodus. Once sold as a gladiator by the latter, Maximus’ fate seems sealed, however Commodus will pay for his megalomania…
Joaquin Phoenix currently stars in Ridley Scott’s latest epic, Napoleon, about another absolute ruler. If Commodus was an aristocratic madman, then Napoleon demonstrated himself to be aa brilliant strategist with progressive ideas. He climbed the ladder from the very bottom, ultimately subjugating Europe. Phoenix shines in both imperial interpretations.
