Grachtenfestival en Eye presenteren: WOODCRAFT

Classical music, jazz and world music merge seamlessly: WOODCRAFT’s five string players perform live to accompany Flip Kwakkel’s new dance film Herbs in Corea and footage from Eye’s Bits & Pieces collection.

In this concert, string ensemble WOODCRAFT will accompany the première of Flip Kwakkel’s dance film Herbs in Corea (10’), among others – a film based on the new composition of the same by the quintet. The five musicians were inspired by the complex music of jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and have constructed a whole new musical universe where every door leads to another world. Kwakkel used the same process for his film: in a world of sand, dancer Lee Emanuel is a wakening monster, tumbling from one absurd reality into another.

Wood nymph

The musicians will also perform the composition ‘Daphne and Apollo’: the classical story of the wood nymph pursued by an amorous god, to accompany a selection of footage from the filmmuseum’s Bits & Pieces collection. Programmer Martin de Ruiter put this compilation together from the hundreds of ‘film snippets’ Eye manages: fragments of film that have been lost and can no longer be identified.

Last December, WOODCRAFT won the Dutch Jazz Award for Best Band as well as the audience award at the Dutch Jazz & Crossover Competition. They have performed both in Amsterdam’s Bimhuis venue and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Five musicians that turn the definition of a string quartet upside down – expect improvisation, singing, tears and laughter.
