Ben Verbong based his film on the story of the young student from Haarlem Hannie Schaft (Renée Soutendijk) who, during World War Two, stopped reading law to exercise her communist ideals and sense of justice by joining the resistance. Her boyfriend Hugo (Peter Tuinman) dies during a failed attack after which she goes in search of the collaborators. Ultimately, Hannie Schaft was arrested and shot by a firing squad.
