Humphrey Bogart & James Cagney Night
Koolhoven & Simons: Humphrey Bogart & James Cagney Night
We’re celebrating 100 years of Warner Bros. by showing two famous WB gangster films from the '30s, both starring Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney: The Roaring Twenties on 35m from the Eye collection and Angels with Dirty Faces.

Programme
The Roaring Twenties (Raoul Walsh, US 1939)
Three friends return after World War I to a very different America. Alcohol is hard to obtain – and therefore more popular than ever. Two of the three friends end up in the criminal milieu (including Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney), while the third becomes a lawyer, helping his friends with their legal difficulties.
Angels with Dirty Faces (Michael Curtiz, US 1938)
Two kids from the slums take different paths after a failed break-in. Rocky (James Cagney) is sent to a reform school and becomes a big local gangster, while Jerry (Pat O'Brien) goes on to become a priest, trying to prevent young people from getting involved in crime. Humphrey Bogart plays the smart lawyer. Produced by Warner Bros. which rose to prominence thanks to films like this: a mix of gangster film and social-critical drama.

Every month, Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinizing the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
