How often do you get to see Mel Brooks’ masterpiece Young Frankenstein, Paul Verhoeven’s cyborg prophecy Robocop or Rob Reiner’s mother of all mockumentaries This Is Spinal Tap on the big screen? The answer, of course, is: at most seldom, probably never.

Each month, Koolhoven and Simons take a deep dive into the ins & outs of genre film. With an ode to rare trailers and forgotten classics from the Eye collection. Fancy an evening of giallo with Dario Argento? A blast of Gothic? Or a tasty cannibal special? Koolhoven & Simons have it all!

Thriller, western, suspense, horror, comedy or sci-fi: film history is crammed full of tried-and-tested genres, each with its own specific dramaturgical rules and cinematic techniques, operating within, outside of or right across the well-trodden Hollywood paths, characterised by refined tastes or brutally trampling the venerated laws of cinematography underfoot.

Banging

Or, in the words of Koolhoven: “We intend to give the audience an hour of solid entertainment in the form of the ins & outs of genre film, in line with the month’s theme. Guaranteed to be banging. Satanism, Humphrey Bogart, Flops Night, or maybe something about Lucio Fulci’s extremely grouchy zombies? Anything is possible, nothing is too crazy.”

As Simons puts it: “It’s in our film-loving blood. Every month, we guide you through the juiciest, most hotly debated films, all accompanied by a roaring commentary. As an ode to forgotten, vilified or once venerated genre gems.”
