Koolhoven & Simons
A montly ode to genre cinema
How often do you still get the chance to see Bad Lieutenant (1992), Young Frankenstein (1974) or Darkman (1990) on the big screen at your favourite cinema? Rarely or never, as even the most hardcore film buff will have to admit. That’s why it’s a good thing to have filmmaker and VPRO presenter Martin Koolhoven and Eye programmer Ronald Simons, film specialists out of cinephile necessity, join forces.
Every month, Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinizing the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
Why in Eye
Our cinephile instincts are heading in one direction only: towards each other. Every month we’ll be picking the juiciest genres, and we’ll be at our rip-roaring best.

A year after Cinema Egzotik closed its doors, the two got back together to guide you through the landscape of the unsung, vilified or once glorified genre film. Koolhoven and Simons talk about their love for the genre film using rare trailers from Eye’s collection (some of them on 35mm), followed by their film of choice (preferably on celluloid).
Every month, I look forward to us keeping the audience entertained for an hour and topping it with an energy-packed genre film.
