Il conformista

Bernardo Bertolucci / IT, FR, DE, 1970 / 113 min.

Bertolucci uses everyman Marcello to show how people adapted to fascism. Upon its release in 1970, this now classic film, caused uproar as it reminded Italy of its undiscussed fascist past. This 4K restoration reveals it in all its glory.

Marcello Clerici (Jean-Louis Trintignant), an ex-student from a wealthy family, carries out executions for the fascists, including that of his former philosophy professor and an avowed antifascist in Paris. The situation is further complicated when Marcello falls for the professor’s wife. After Mussolini is deposed, the opportunist eradicates all evidence of his collaboration.
