Novecento
Bernardo Bertolucci / IT, FR, 1976 / 318 min.
Bertolucci’s epic tale about the conflict between northern Italian socialists and Mussolini’s fascist blackshirts, seen through the eyes of two childhood friends who become enemies, confronted Italy with its political past. Star turns for Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu and Donald Sutherland.

In 1976, Bernardo Bertolucci aimed to boil 50 years of Italian history down into a five-hour film with his two-parter Novecento. 35 years later, Bertolucci's epic – restored in 2006 – proves just as impressive as it was upon release.
In it, Bertolucci provides his rosy take on Italy’s class system. Using the friendship between landowner Alfredo Berlinghieri (Robert De Niro) and farmer’s son Olmo Dalco (Gérard Depardieu), the director appraises the first half of the 20th century.
After 164 minutes, there is a break of 25 minutes, after which part two starts.
