Il deserto dei Tartari
Valerio Zurlini / IT, FR, DE, 1975 / 140 min.
Like Jessica Woodworth (Luka), Valerio Zurlini based his story of a fort awaiting an attack from the Tatars on Dino Buzzati’s novel ‘Il deserto dei Tartari’. For his film version, he hired an all-star European cast.

In 1940, Dino Buzzati wrote a novel about a young, ambitious officer posted to a fort in an inhospitable area ‘on the edge of the desert where the Tatars come from’. Buzzati doesn’t further specify either the place or period of the action; the novel focuses on the effect of the passing of time: the soldiers await an enemy who never appears.
