Inside Llewyn Davis

Ethan Coen, Joel Coen / US, FR, 2013 / 105 min.

Joel and Etnan Coen’s created another wonderfully eccentric character with the wandering, failed folk singer Llewyn Davis. This plotless film with its surreal edge and replete with tragicomic dialogues becomes increasingly melancholy. Winne of the Jury prize in Cannes.

Joel and Ethan Coen are the chroniclers of eccentric Americana and Llewyn Davis is one of their most important creations. This harried singer only just scrapes by working on the edges of the flourishing folk scene in Greenwich Village in the early 1960s. Oscar Isaac is sublime as Llewyn, loosely modelled on folk legend Dave Van Ronk from the Village, an exceptionally talented, but also irascible, crude, self-destructive musician.
