Koolhoven & Simons: International Talk Like a Pirate Day Night

Aaarrr! Pirates, mutineers and buccaneers, pin back your ears: 19 September is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. So today we’re showing an hour of clips and trailers from pirate films followed by the main feature, sinister ghost story The Fog by John Carpenter.

poster The Fog (John Carpenter, US 1979)
Antonio Bay, California. A small group of children are listening intently to a fisherman, who is telling them a centuries-old tale as they sit around the campfire. A cosy scene – until a creepy mist comes rolling in off the sea, to take revenge on this little coastal community.

John Carpenter made his supernatural thriller in the wake of the resounding success of Halloween, trading the suburbs for a seemingly serene coastal resort. Familiar faces from Halloween are present, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Nancy Loomis. In The Fog, Carpenter reveals himself a true master of simplicity, relying completely on the simmering fear of the unknown, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe and RKO horror films, accompanied by the sound of foghorns and electronic music from the maestro himself.

Preceded by an hour of clips and trailers from pirate films such as Captain Blood, Cutthroat Island and The Goonies.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

19 September is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. This day was founded in 1995 as a joke between friends, one of whom had been injured playing racquetball and screamed “Aaarrr!”, leading to this date being dedicated to the celebration of pirate talk.

Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinising the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
