Jacky
Fow Pyng Hu, Brat Ljatifi / NL, 2000 / 79 min.
Jacky was recently rediscovered at the CinemAsia film festival as 'one of the first Chinese diaspora films made in the Netherlands'. Jacky (Fow Pyng Hu) is a carefree 25-year-old second-generation child of Chinese immigrants who suddenly faces the tradition of having to marry a woman from China.

The first Chinese feature film made in the Netherlands, Jacky is one of the few Dutch films to have screened in Cannes (Un Certain Regard). Jacky is the impressive feature debut of Dutch Chinese Fow Pyng Hu and his fellow student at the Rietveld Academy, Brat Ljatifi. The story is told in few words and the marvellous, observational cinematography of Benito Strangio. Two decades after its release, the film presents a time capsule of the Dutch landscape (and trains) of the early 21st century.
