Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter
David Zellner / US, 2014 / 105 min.
In this darkly comedic odyssey, an office worker from Tokyo finds a worn VHS tape of Joel and Ethan Coen’s Fargo. She becomes convinced that the lost money bag is real and starts a reckless search for it.

The lonely Japanese woman Kumiko, played by the Oscar nominated Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, Pacific Rim), becomes obsessed with Fargo, which she views as a documentary because the opening credits say it is 'a true story'. She leaves Tokyo behind and with her crudely drawn map and entirely unprepared she starts her reckless search for the mythical buried treasure across a frozen Minnesota. She becomes embroiled in a dangerous adventure whereby the boundary between reality and fantasy becomes ever more porous.
