Fargo
Ethan Coen, Joel Coen / US, 1996 / 98 min.
Pitch black comedy is a parody of the true crime genre which is deeply thrilling thanks to its hilarious, exaggerated ordinariness. The snow white scenes Fargo opens with are soon sullied with large drops of blood. “You betcha!”

The fact that the lines “Hon, I’ve got the groceries!” and “Daddy is here” are morbidly charged is all down to the opening scene. Immediately before Jerry Lundegaard’s jovial arrival we witnessed a nervous meeting between the happy-go-lucky Jerry (William H. Macy) and two criminal nitwits, Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud. In the snowy town of Fargo, North Dakota they craft a crooked plan: Carl and Gaear will kidnap Jerry’s wife, after which the three of them will share the ransom money her father will pay. Steve Buscemi plays the nervously chatty, ‘funny lookin’ Carl Showalter, a hint the entire caper is about to go sour. Frances McDormand stars as a cop in a down parka congenially waddling her highly pregnant self through the chaos.
