La grande illusion
Jean Renoir / FR, 1937 / 117 min.
Jean Renoir’s classic is still seen as a powerful anti-war statement. Four French prisoners of war during WWI keep on trying to escape, in close cooperation. With performances from Jean Gabin and Erich von Stroheim as an archetypal German officer, among others.

1937 – just three years before the outbreak of World War II. The great French director Jean Renoir (La règle du jeu, La bête humaine) sensed what was to come, and made this warning of the horrors of war.
