La piscine
Jacques Deray / FR, IT, 1968 / 123 min.
Four characters meet around a swimming pool at a luxury villa in Saint-Tropez. Lovers Marianne (Romy Schneider) and Jean-Paul (Alain Delon) receive a visit from Marianne’s former lover Harry and his young, attractive daughter Penelope (Jane Birkin). Complications naturally ensue.

In this sultry thriller, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider circle one another, with a smouldering Jane Birkin in the background. The atmosphere – initially light, bucolic and pleasant – becomes oppressive. The men and women wind up in a dark erotic waltz, driven by base motives. The moves on this relationship chessboard are predictable, the tension unbearable.
