Laure Prouvost: Deep See Blue Surrounding You

Eye on Art

Eye invited Laure Prouvost to immerse herself in the collection. She selected short old films and excerpts connected to her own work featuring magic, the world underwater, Venice and the surreal Droompaleis by 19th-entury postman Ferdinand Cheval. Prouvost will also perform Deep Blue Sea.

poster Eye on Art: Laure Prouvost

Artist Laure Prouvost is world famous for her films and installations. In 2013, she won the Turner Prize and in 2019 she represented France at the Venice Biennale. Her work immerses audiences in a world of dreams, surrealism, magic and every now and then an octopus. Simultaneously, she tackles urgent themes such as emancipation, globalisation, migration and climate change.

The Deep See Blue Surrounding You / Vois Ce Bleu Profond Te Fondre project she created for the Venice Biennale is currently on show at the Bonnefanten museum in Maastricht. This centres on the short film They Parlaient Idéale (2019) in which a group of artists undertake a road trip from a Parisian suburb and Marseille to Venice. En route, the artist invites audiences to seek out the things that connect us despite our differences, ages, language or origin.

Occasioned by the exhibition at the Bonnefanten museum, Eye invited Laure Prouvost to take a dive in the collection. Together with Martha Kirszenbaum, the curator of Deep See Blue Surrounding You / Vois Ce Bleu Profond Te Fondre, she selected short historical films and excerpts connected to her own work featuring magic, the world underwater, Venice and the surreal Ideal Palace by 19th-century postman Ferdinand Cheval.

During this evening, Prouvost will perform Deep See Blue and talk to Martha Kirszenbaum and Marian Cousijn (Eye). Alongside the excerpts from Eye’s collection, Prouvost’s own film They Parlaient Idéale (2019) will also be screened.
