Leiden University: (Mis)Representing Animals
ResearchLabs 2025: Leiden University: (Mis)Representing Animals
This eclectic set of films put together by Leiden University students, seeks to initiate reflection upon the representation of animals in cinema by also stressing their misrepresentation.

Current artistic debates are much preoccupied with questions about changing the human-perspective towards one which takes in consideration other organisms. Artists formulating these non-human perspectives often attempt to build artistic strategies which criticize the anthropocene and through creating new ways of seeing.
Our programme (Mis)Representing Animals, stands in dialogue with these efforts. By showing different examples of how animals are represented in Dutch film throughout the years, we want to shed light on the various stylistic manners in which animals are depicted; which modes of depiction feel “true” to the animal’s experience and which seem to reflect a more “human gaze” upon animals?
Through our curation, we would like to raise questions on what it would take to “understand” other species. However, our curation is not solemnly interested in how animals should be depicted but also in how animals are depicted, as this seems to reveal something about our relationship towards other species.
