Liberté
Albert Serra / FR, DEUZE, PT, ES, 2019 / 132 min.
Are those who strive for ultimate freedom and boundless pleasure happier than others? The libertine nobles fleeing the court of puritan Louis the Sixteenth believe so. A glittering role for Helmut Berger as the Prussian free-thinking Duke De Walchen.
France, 1774. The reign of Louis XVI seeks to put an end to the excesses of the French aristocracy. There is no room in Versailles for freethinkers who challenge the absolute authority of God, the Church and the State.
Serra on Liberté: “It’s a costume film that could just as easily be set in today’s club scene. There, there are no hierarchical relations between beautiful or ugly people, rich or poor, masters and servants – everything is interchangeable; there is nothing but bodies, desires and impulses. You can forget yourself at last.”
Albert Serra’s ninth feature film is an adaptation of the play of the same title that he put on for the Volksbühne in Berlin. The film won the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard selection at Cannes.
