Local Hero
Bill Forsyth / GB, 1983 / 111 min.
An American oil executive’s worldview is rocked in Scotland. 40 years ago, the prophetic satire Local Hero used dry humour to warn us about the impact of short-term profit on the environment. Featuring Hollywood legend Burt Lancaster.

Bill Forsyth put Scottish cinema on the map with this delightfully eccentric comedy about a culture clash. Local Hero shadows Texan oil executive Mac (Peter Riegert), whose idiotic boss (Burt Lancaster) sends him to a remote coastal village in Scotland and is commissioned to buy out the village so they can build a refinery there. Soon enough, business mixes with pleasure and Mac becomes enchanted with the picturesque location and the odd inhabitants – Texas feels increasingly far away.
