Mamma Roma
Pier Paolo Pasolini / IT, 1962 / 107 min.
Pasolini's sublime portrayal of workaday Rome, with Anna Magnani in the lead. For Pasolini, Magnani acts as the embodiment of his city in the role of prostitute Mamma Roma, a survivor against all odds. Restored in 4K.

Pasolini’s second fiction feature closely follows the trail blazed by neorealist films such as Rossellini's Roma, città aperta (1945). But above all, Mamma Roma is a superb showcase for Magnani playing a prostitute who believes she can escape her red-light existence when her pimp, Carmine, gets married. She becomes a market vendor and also arranges a job for her uncommunicative seventeen-year-old son, Ettore. Her dream of a respectable life soon falls apart when the apple of her eye proves to be a headstrong teenager determined to associate with the wrong crowd.
