Megalopolis I
Meet the Archive: Megalopolis I
Meet the Archive session about Megalopolis I, Pim de la Parra’s first film. Eye curator Lou Burkart and NRC film critic André Waardenburg will discuss the film’s genesis, after which it will be screened to celebrate 50 years of Surinamese independence.

In 1963, Megalopolis I, Pim de la Parra’s first film was screened at the student film festival Cinestud. The young filmmaker from Surinam had only moved to the Netherlands three years before, where he had attended the Filmacademie since 1962. His debut, shot with a borrowed camera, was given a special jury commendation at Cinestud. In the Algemeen Handelsblad newspaper, the renowned Dutch film critic Jan Blokker praised Megalopolis I – that makes many cinematic and political references – “as an unbelievably true, honest document: a true ‘cri-de-coeur’”.
