Menashe
Joshua Z Weinstein / US, 2017 / 82 min.
AThe feature film debut of documentarian Joshua Z Weinstein is an affectionate story about Menashe, a Hasidic widower played by internet comedian Menashe Lustig. The story is loosely based on Lustig’s own life. Menashe’s wife having died, the Hasidic community is pushing him to remarry or else send his son Rieven to live with his more prosperous and successfully married brother-in-law, in accordance with the Hasidic tradition that forbids a child growing up in a motherless home.

Weinstein deftly alternates humorous and emotive scenes and provides a window into the tightly-knit Hasidic community of Borough Park in New York.
