Amsterdam Forever Young: Met het oog op Amsterdam-Noord

Two recent documentaries, by Jaap van den Beukel and Hugo Drechsler, about the residents of Amsterdam-Noord. Paultje moves in with his elderly brother Paul, Noord residents talk about the changes in their neighbourhood and personal lives. Screening in honour of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.

For the longest time, the north of Amsterdam – the one of the city’s largest as far as population and surface area are concerned – was somewhat forgotten. After the downturn of the shipyards ADM and NDSM in the late 1970s, the northern part of the city suffered from poor housing, unemployment and poverty.

Many years later, Noord has increasingly become a vibrant hub on the banks of the IJ, loved by young families, expats and festival goers. This transformation, also called gentrification, is not without its challenges, because longtime residents see rents rising, groceries becoming more expensive and their feeling of community threatened.

Jaap van den Beukel and Hugo Drechsler set out to capture life in the neighbourhood, resulting in a portrait of two brothers who try to find each other amid a troubled family history, and intimate and moving portraits of the residents of one of the typical Noord garden villages.

Paul en Paul (Hugo Drechsler, NL 2024, 28’)

After a prison sentence, sick sixty-something Paul moves in with his also sick, much older brother Paul, who lives in a cozy garden village house. Under the same roof, a troubled family history appears to complicate the already complex bond between the brothers. Hugo Drechsler directed this graduation film (Film Academy class 2023).

Mijn Noord (Jaap van den Beukel, NL 2024, 58’)

Photographer and documentarian Jaap van den Beukel moved to Amsterdam-Noord four years ago. His new view of the Tuindorp Nieuwendam district became the source of inspiration for his photo and film project Mijn Noord. Van den Beukel follows the residents of these neighbourhoods and takes you into their worlds. With humour and a dose of Amsterdam directness, the residents tell personal stories about love, loss and dreams and address current issues, such as the changes in the neighbourhood.

Jaap van den Beukel will introduce his film beforehand.
