Photographer and documentary filmmaker Jaap van den Beukel moved to the northern part of Amsterdam four years ago. His new view of the Tuindorp Nieuwendam neighbourhood inspired the photography and film project Mijn Noord that was nominated for the Zilveren Camera and the Dutch Photography Award.
Van den Beukel approached over 100 inhabitants of his district and made street portraits of them. The book of the latter was published earlier this year and outside on the IJpromenade you can admire the photo exhibition until early December. Van den Beukel also shot a documentary Mijn Noord, in which he follows the garden city’s inhabitants and viewers are briefly immersed in their lives as they show you, in their inimitable way, what’s going on in their lives and neighbourhood.
