MIVC – Knowingly, Unknowingly
Researchlabs 2023: MIVC – Knowingly, Unknowingly
The process of artistic creation proved to be a tool of liberation for students of The Master Institute of Visual Cultures (MIVC) at the St. Joost School of Art & Design
We find ourselves in a classroom. We meet our peers, we acknowledge damage, and we decide to listen. Sharing our stories with each other we dig through the depth of numerous problematics that our generation has to face. Peeling off the layers of our personal, our inherited and our adapted patterns - we were trying to imagine possible futures and find ways to connect our private selves with our public existence.
We found ourselves with our eyes, ears and hearts fully open. We engage and interact with our surroundings through our body, perceptions, and sensitivities. Through a perception of power structure, we separate and internalize our methods of discernment and combine the multiplicity of languages to visualize our story.
Within these unraveling stories of healing, of overcoming, of manifesting, of mourning, of reimagining and reapproaching the sore topics, we floated into a materialization of a series of audiovisual works. Through our narration, we used fiction as a strategic instrument. The cinematic and sonic mediums enabled the development of speculative realities and dystopian futures, with narrations that acknowledge history, honesty and critically reflect on the present.
The process of creation of these stories has become a tool for liberation. We have built a space of trust and vulnerability, and saw the enormous power of change and reflection. We could say that we did seek refuge with our works, to feel lighter, knowingly, unknowingly creating fictions. Through our voices, the concepts we merge with, have given an identity; a body, a body those questions, by covering imaginary distances between the livings things places.
