Legendary horror director Lucio Fulci always shifted a couple of boundaries you didn’t even know existed. Today, we will watch the masterwork The Beyond, which will mentally prepare us for the grindhouse classic The New York Ripper.

Horror maestro Lucio Fulci considered his giallo films visual poetry, because 'poetry develops when you break boundaries'. Boundaries are indeed stretched to breaking point in films such as Zombi 2, which we screened during Cinema Egzotik. Today we will once again follow the trail of blood with The Beyond and The New York Ripper.

How often do you still get the chance to see Bad Lieutenant (1992), Young Frankenstein (1974) or Darkman (1990) on the big screen at your favourite cinema? Rarely or never, as even the most hardcore film buff will have to admit. That’s why it’s a good thing to have filmmaker and VPRO presenter Martin Koolhoven and Eye programmer Ronald Simons, film specialists out of cinephile necessity, join forces.

Martin Koolhoven and Ronald Simons highlight humanity and nature’s conflicts in cinematic history followed by a screening of Phase IV from 1974, legendary designer Saul Bass’ sole directorial outing.

Humanity and nature are seldom a good combination, to put it mildly. Our hubris and misplaced sense of superiority have frequently been punished throughout cinema’s history. How inventive filmmakers always are when depicting nature’s revenge; featuring excerpts from Them!, Empire of the Ants, Godzilla vs The Smog Monster and The Island Of Dr. Moreau. These will be followed by a screening of Phase IV directed by Saul Bass in which super intelligent ants created by cosmic radiation battle humanity.
‘I hope there will be more where this came from,’ wrote a film critic in the Het Parool [Dutch broadsheet] when Saul Bass' ‘intelligently conceived’ science fiction film Phase IV was released. Nevertheless, for Bass – a talented title sequence designer (for Hitchcock and Otto Preminger, among others) – this psychedelic, socially critical monster movie was all he would ever make.
 This program was commissioned by InScience - International Science Film Festival Nijmegen, the science film festival in the Netherlands.

Nature Strikes Back

Koolhoven and Simons chose two mockumentaries that lead us, willingly, astray. A double bill of Woody Allen’s Take the Money and Run (1969) and Benoît Poelvoorde’s C'est arrivé près de chez vous (1992).

Woody Allen’s directorial debut Take the Money and Run, about a bungling criminal with a pistol made of soap. A satire on the crime genre, bursting with of visual and verbal jokes in which craziness always triumphs: like in the scene where he conducts a documentary-style interview with his parents who are wearing Groucho Marx disguises to hide their shame about their son. The most frequently quoted line is the badly spelled robbery note: “Please put $50,000 into this bag and abt natural, because I am pointing a gub at you.”
Then we die laughing with C'est arrivé près de chez vous, a pitch-black mockumentary and instant cult hit in which a professional hit man is followed by a film crew who he manipulates in a masterly way, making them accomplices to his crimes. A smart, harsh indictment of the voyeurism of certain media and their grip on everyday life.

Mockumentary Night

When nerds were still real nerds and not today’s tech millionaires: tonight Revenge of the Nerds as well as excerpts featuring famous nerds such as George McFly from Back to the Future (1985) and Willy from Amsterdamned (1988).

The series of Revenge of the Nerds films is a typical product of its time – a franchise that could only have developed during pre-internet, when being a nerd meant being ‘good with computers'. Revenge of the Nerds features all manner of outcasts who have been thrown out of their freshmen dorms after fellow students burnt down their own accommodation.
The only reason the mean Jocks hate the nerdy Lambdas is because they are different. To prove their hipness, the Lambdas briefly change into a New Wave band, yet in the eyes of others, they will never belong. “They all look the same to me, “says one of the petty sorority girls.
Later on, people argued in favour of viewing Revenge of the Nerds as a parable about civil rights. The nerds demand justice and acceptance of their otherness. It is well put, but Revenge of the Nerds is also just a lowbrow university comedy – one of the best in the genre – featuring idiotic party animals, cliches about bitchy bimbos and sex jokes from a bygone era.
