Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
Frank Capra / US, 1936 / 115 min.
Classic from Columbia Pictures, which recently celebrated its centenary. Delectable screwball-comedy about a man who inherits 20 million dollars and decides to give it all away to the poor. A female reporter tracks him down.

The naïve Longfellow Deed (Gary Cooper) leads a quiet life, writing sentimental greeting card poetry. When he inherits 20 million dollars from an unknown relative, he is soon beset by big city conmen. He decides to give his fortune away to poor farmers in particular, but is subsequently excoriated by the derisory cultural elite and the cynical New York press due to his “insane desire to become a philanthropist”.
