Programmers of the Future: News from Home

Chantal Akerman moved to New York in the 1970s. Her 16mm footage of anonymous streets, parking lots, subway stations and shabby fast food restaurants expresses a sense of disconnection—from home, family, the past and her old identity.

In this magnificent and influential documentary, Chantal Akerman reads her mother’s letters while the alienating cityscape of New York unfolds before her. From this simple yet powerful premise, a layered portrait of displacement emerges. The film tells the story of detachment from home, set against a mother’s longing voice reaching out in search of connection with her daughter.

Akerman crafts a singular New York symphony, an autobiographical essay told entirely through the words of others and images charged with wonder, curiosity, and melancholy.

The film is a 2K Restoration.

News from Home will be preceded by the video tutorial/short film How to Live with Regret by documentary filmmaker John Wilson.

Programmers of the Future

Humie Pourseyf, Kato van der Speeten and Alicia Bergamelli, the three Programmers of the Future of the third edition, bid their farewell to Eye Filmmuseum with this poignant meditation on what it means to be far from home, to search for a new one and yourself, in cities as harsh, beautiful and complex as Amsterdam can sometimes be.

Programme

  • How to Live with Regret (John Wilson, US 2018, 10')

Filmmaker John Wilson's satirical video tutorial explores the world of regrets, large and small. His signature, hesitant voiceover, weaves hilarious connections between shaky cam footage of unusual sights in and around NYC as well as his 'advice on life'.

  • News from Home (Chantal Akerman, BE/FR/DE 1976, 89')

Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman lives in New York. Footage of the city is accompanied by texts from the director's loving mother, back home in Brussels. NYC becomes increasingly central, while the words of her mother, read by Akerman herself, gradually fade away.
