Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens
Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau / DEUZE, 1921 / 95 min.
To accompany the premiere of Robbert Egger’s remake of F.W. Murnau’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s gothic horror story, Eye will also screen Murnau’s version. Expressionist horror from the Weimar Republic, Max Schreck is unforgettable as the unwholesome Transylvanian count. With live musical accompaniment by Martin de Ruiter (piano).

Horror and romance in this German 'Dracula' adaptation. F.W. Murnau translocated Bram Stoker’s story from England to the fictional Baltic Sea town of Wisborg interlarding it with elements typical of Weimar cinema. Highly dramatic archetypes capitalise on the collective revulsion at avarice and corruption, the fear of deadly epidemics and the dangers of suppressing erotic desires. The romantic and the macabre alternate in both the images and music.
A film from the holdings of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden.
