Carl Dreyer / DK, 1954 / 125 min.
A Danish family is torn asunder by belief and religious ideology. Dreyer’s masterpiece contains some of the most breathtaking mise-en-scène in cinema history. Winner of the Golden Lion at the 1955 Venice Film Festival. New restoration.
Carl Th. Dreyer created this much-lauded adaptation of Kaj Munk’s 1932 play. Dreyer told Munk’s story of fanatical religiosity in rugged Jutland in long, calm shots with one of the most famous opening scenes in cinema history. The lighting is very reminiscent of old master paintings.
