Gertrud
Carl Dreyer / DK, 1964 / 114 min.
Gertrud is married to a politician and has an affair with a young musician. Before the marriage, she had a relationship with a poet. She breaks with them all, choosing instead for independence. Years later, uncompromising Gertrud looks back on her life, in this underrated work by film innovator Dreyer.
Dreyer’s last film, an adaptation of Hjalmar Soderberg’s 1919 play, sketches two days in the life of Gertrud Kanning. To escape from a passionless marriage, she goes in search of absolute love. But an exciting affair with a younger man and the return of an old flame fail to offer her the answer she’s looking for.
